So today I found a little surprise waiting for me when I checked my Facebook. I had a message from one of Stephen's coaches, Tim Ogard. This man means alot to Stephen. He taught him alot of what he knows now about baseball and was a great influence for Stephen growing up. Well he read my blogpost (hopefully he didn't watch our embarrassing music video) about Esteban and liked it so much that he sent me a message telling me how much he loved Stephen and what a great player he was back in the day. (you still are babe) But I loved this so much I had to record it somewhere for time and all eternity. Hence the blog post. Here is a small part of what he said:
"Your friends at BYU have seen him make many great catches out in Center Field. He was doing that when he was 13 on a regular basis. He was awarded "Defensive player of the Tournament" on several occasions. We often played on Junior High fields where there were no outfield fences. When centerfield ran out, there was the football field and it just went on for ever. Stephen would run down balls and catch them no matter how far they were hit, he amazed us many times. We used to play tournaments up near the Canadian border, there was a field where with an uphill slant, out beyond where it was thought a ball could be hit. One time, a ball got hit way out there, and Stephen ran right up that hill and caught it. It was a dangerous thing to have that hill there when a guy is going that fast, and he made it look like an easy catch. Back in those days, he looked just like he does now going after a ball, only he was shorter!!!"
My question to Tim is did he have the same hockey temper back when he was 13? I bet he did.
Tim was also kind enough to send me some cute pictures of little Esteban back in the day.
(His the cutie with the grey cutoff shirt)
I have come to realize that I was pretty smart about marrying Stephen. I have no talents whatsoever. Remember back in the day in school when they asked you to list your talents. Here is what my list probably looked like:
"I talk. alot."
"I eat. alot"
"Did I already say I talk alot?"
Well thanks to Stephen maybe one of our kids will be the next Babe Ruth (minus the extra pounds) and he'll buy me a house on the beach and I can live the rest of my life drinking pina coladas while laying on a hammock under a palm tree. Have I mentioned how Utah forgot it was summer?

Esteban
Esteban is playing in the MWC Championship this week and I miss him. So far they have one one and lost one. He is actually playing another game right this second. In honor of his last baseball week of the season I thought I would right a little about Esteban's baseball career. (remember this is from my point of view so the stories might be exaggerated to make Stephen look better and my baseball knowledge comes to about less than 0 but it's my blog so I win).
Stephen's mom says she noticed Stephen was different the moment she started taking him to baseball games. The Wells are from Seattle so they would go to a lot of Mariners' games. Six boys one mom one dad in a 3 hour 9 inning baseball game? doomed for disaster right? not with Stephen. Cindy (my mother in law) says that most of her boys would end up running around and whining they wanted to go home cause it was cold but not Stephen. He would sit quietly and absorb everything that was going on. He loved major league baseball.
It was only uphill from then on. He was three-time all-league at Inglemoor High ... voted most inspirational player on team as a senior. Latter on when he played at BYU and was named to the Mountain West Conference All-Tournament Team ... selected Honorable Mention Freshman All-American by Ping!Baseball and Academic All-Mountain West Conference ... ended the season with a current 15-game hitting streak ... had an eight-game hitting streak earlier in the season ... was on base 10 consecutive times against Utah. (for those who think I'm bragging I am. Stephen is worth bragging and since he won't do it I will).
Stephen wasn't always a baseball star (yes honey you are a star even if you don't want to). Stephen suffered his first year at BYU from a disease we all have experienced sometime in our life. Homesickness. He hated school, he didn't want to play baseball and one day he called his mom and said, "mom I'm coming home." My mother in law, being the wise lady that she is told Stephen he could walk if he wanted to come home cause she wasn't buying him a ticket. Stephen struggled with this until he went on a mission and became a man. Just saying. then a year later he met a wonderful girl who inspired him to be better and was so fun he sometime forgot she was his girlfriend and called her dude. He still does that.
Let me tell you, between you and me, Stephen is the nicest guy but the moment he goes into the field he becomes an angry maniac. We all refer to it as his hockey temper. We are all grateful he plays centerfield so no one can here him yelling at umpires when they make a "bad call". He was also caught on camera once hitting the wall (he claims he was just trying to put the bat away but it's on tape I have proof) after he striked out. Don't get me wrong thought the root of this is Stephen's undying love for baseball. He LOVES baseball. I have learned from him that if you want to be good at something you have to commit to it and work the hardest you can at it. And never ever give up. I am really proud of him and I know he will accomplish great things in life.

Ma Brosephs
"To the outside world, we all grow old. But not to brothers and sisters. We know each other as we always were. We know each other's hearts. We share private family jokes. We remember family feuds and secrets, family griefs and joys. We live outside the touch of time."
Let's just say I love my siblings. We have been best buddies since I can remember. Don't get me wrong we would fight like crazy. Once we were so angry with my little sister we locked her up in the bathroom and then went out to play and forgot about her. Imagine our surprise when we got back around five...But that's what siblings do. you fight and five minutes later you are best buds again. Well we worked really hard so that they could come spend to summer with me and stephen (and marcela occassionally) and the day has come!! they get here on Friday. I haven't seen them since last summer sooo it's been a awhile.
Here are some cool stories of our childhood (although our childhood is not over since we are still children:)
-when we were little we used to love going to the pool. We would play this game were we would throw a penny or anything that would sink, into the pool and then dive to see who could get it first. As dumb as this sounds we loved it. we would play it for hours until we were so sunburned we couldn't put clothes on cause it ripped our skin. boy were we happy. pool honeys!!!!
-we used to play city in the house. FYI parents should really not leave there kids alone in the house. as soon as my mom would leave we would all pick a room and convert it into our store. Marcela had a restaurant and would create her own food and serve it in those tiny plates you get when you're a kid. I would sell our clothes in the room and carry my baby around and tito and tita would buy. somehow marcela would always end up with all the money....
-i need to confess that we were not the behaved kids. We had some addictions. One of them being gambling. Yes we liked to gamble. We would gather all the coins in the house and play our own version of poker (which we called seven crazy men). We would play all summer. Once we were playing in my aunts dining room on a Sunday....and the bishop came in we quickly threw all the coins to the floor but we didn't think about the tinkling noice it would make when they fell. the bishop just laughed and sent us to read our scriptures.
-we didn't have cable so in the summers we had to get creative. We loved hiking and biking and walking through the jungle. Once, inspired by Lassie, we decided to go deep into the forest and then follow our dog home, since obviously he was a over intelligent canine and would lead us there efficiently. We walked for hours untill we realized we were five minutes away from our backyard. boy those were the days.
